Her employer had never said as much and the scarecrow's brother was tight lipped for protection's purpose, but she knew. Emmaline saw it in the way the girl was always hunched over, curled up to present the smallest target possible. She saw it in the way that she avoided contact with all but her brother and Leah. She actually flinched and drew away quickly if someone touched her by accident. Something had gone wrong, though no one told her and honestly, why would they?
